Las bandas del Actitud Fest (XVI) – ANTILLECTUAL: ‘Lamentablemente, incluso en nuestra escena punk «abierta y acogedora», existe toda una mierda machista que debe ser desafiada’

Desde los Países Bajos, nos viene a visitar este trío que lleva desde el año 2005 pateándose todo el planeta haciendo llegar su punk rock político y melódico hasta los oídos más inquietos de toda una generación con ganas de cambiar lo todo. En el Actitud Fest vamos a tener la ocasión de comprobarlo.

¡Hola, chicos! Antes de nada, muchas gracias por tomarOS el tiempo de responder a estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo estáis?

Willem: ¡Muy bien! Acabamos de lanzar un nuevo single, «Heads You Win, Tails We Lose», y hemos estado haciendo algunos festivales geniales y preparando algunos festivales más para el resto del verano. Además de eso, estamos trabajando en música nueva.

Para aquellos que no os conozcan, ¿podríais explicarnos un poco quiénes sois, de dónde venís, qué tipo de música hacéis y con qué otros proyectos estáis o habéis estado involucrados?

Riekus: somos tres chicos de los Países Bajos que han estado tocando y haciendo giras durante aproximadamente quince años. Nuestra música es una mezcla de un par de géneros de los años 90/00 y 10, siempre llenos de energía y melodía, acompañado de un mensaje crítico. ¡Punk rock, tíos! Todos hemos estado en otras bandas antes. Willem estaba en una banda llamada Brat Pack. Yo solía tocar en una banda hardcore llamada Omission (no la banda española de thrash metal...) y actualmente estoy en una banda llamada Dead Giveaway y otra aún sin nombre. Toon solía tocar en una banda muy ruidosa llamada Through The Struggle, y también está trabajando en música nueva con algunos amigos.

Toon: Esa nueva música va a ser muy, muy fuerte también. No tengo otras palabras para describirlo. Va a ser tan ruidosa como el infierno… jajaja. Estad atentos si os gustan bandas como Norma Jean o The Chariot, pues va a ser un poco así. Acerca de Antillectual, estoy de acuerdo con Riekus sobre el mensaje crítico. Siento que es una gran parte de nuestra identidad: el mensaje y la ética. Este es un cliché (quizás porque hay algo de cierto en ello), pero es más que solo música para nosotros.

¿Qué habéis publicado por el momento y dónde podemos encontrarlo?

W: Podéis pillar nuestra música a través de nuestra website y demás plataformas como Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc. Nuestro nuevo single lo podéis escuchar aquí.

¿Los fans de qué bandas crees que deberían pegarle un tiento de inmediato a vuestra música?

R: nos comparan con muchas bandas, lo cual es natural dadas nuestras influencias. Supongo que si te gustan Propagandhi, Bad Religion, Strike Anywhere, Hüsker Dü o cualquier otra cosa, probablemente también te guste nuestra música y nuestro mensaje.

T: Además de las canciones de punk melódico y vertiginosas, también tenemos un par de canciones más «Rock», en la línea de Foo Fighters. (Al menos, esa es una comparación que a veces escucho…)

¿Cuáles son los logros de la banda de los que os sintáis más orgulloso? ¿Qué papel juega la banda en vuestra vida y en vuestro día a día?

R: además de la música que escribimos y lanzamos, creo que lo principal, de lo que más nos enorgullecemos, es que hemos logrado tocar en muchos lugares en todo el mundo y hemos conocido a mucha gente en el camino. Girar por Europa es genial, pero ir a lugares como los Estados Unidos, Canadá, Latinoamérica, Rusia y Japón, solo porque tocas música, es un gran privilegio.

W: La música ha tenido un impacto increíble en nuestras vidas, y estamos complacidos de que podamos hacer lo mismo con otras personas.

T: El logro más grande del que estoy más orgulloso es el hecho de que, a través de esta banda, he crecido enormemente como músico, y que como banda evolucionamos. No estoy muy «orientado a los objetivos», en este sentido, sino que veo el «logro» mucho en el aquí y el ahora. Hemos logrado estar en un punto en el que podemos tocar en vivo regularmente, en muchos lugares diferentes… ¡y eso es genial! Pero es un proceso continuo.

Para terminar con vuestra presentación, ¿qué canción (o canciones) creéis que sería/-n la/-s más adecuada/-s para hacerle escuchar a alguien que no esté familiarizado con vuestra música?

W: Si no es tu último lanzamiento del que estés más feliz como banda, ¡es que estás haciendo algo mal! Por lo tanto, visita nuestra web y échale un ojo a todas las plataformas. Nuestro último álbum puede encontrarse aquí.

Nuestra crónica del Actitud Fest del año pasado se tituló «Actitud Fest: el mejor festival alternativo que probablemente aún no conozcas». ¿Estáis de acuerdo con esta afirmación? ¿Qué creéis que hace de este festival un evento tan especial?

W: Nunca hemos estado en el Actitud Fest, por lo que es difícil saber qué esperar. Pero hemos escuchado muchas cosas buenas sobre el festival. Después de recorrer la zona en 2017, estamos muy contentos de volver a Vidreres / Girona / Catalunya / España para esta ocasión.

T: ¡Espero estar de acuerdo con esta afirmación muy pronto!

¿Estuvísteis en el festival en el pasado, ya sea tocando o como público? Si es así… ¿qué momentos o anécdotas recordáis especialmente sobre esas experiencias?

R: Es nuestra primera vez en el festival, y hemos escuchado cosas geniales al respecto. Hemos tocado antes en el área de Vidreres / Girona y disfrutamos siempre del entorno y de la gente, ¡así que esperamos mucho del Actitud!

¿Cuál creéis que es el punto diferencial que vuestra banda aporta al festival? ¿Qué creéis que la gente recordará especialmente de vuestro concierto?

W: En el buen sentido: esperamos que la gente nos aprecie al venir al área solo para tocar en el Actitud Fest. Y tendremos que tomarlo desde allí realmente. Mientras más personas se interesen por lo que hacemos, mejor será nuestro conjunto. Se trata de la interacción.

En el mal sentido: dado que estaremos volando, no podemos traer ningún instrumento. Si quieres ver si nos sentimos muy incómodos con un equipo con el que nunca hemos tocado, ¡ven y ríete!

T: Como se mencionó anteriormente, somos una banda con un mensaje, una banda con una cierta ética. Aunque esto no es poco común en nuestra escena en general, y estoy bastante seguro de que hay bastantes bandas que tocan en el Actitud que comparten estos valores, creo que realmente es una parte esencial de Antillectual transmitir estos valores. Aparte de eso: toco el bajo sin púa, y eso parece sorprender a algunas personas de vez en cuando… jajaja.

¿Qué otras bandas del cartel os gustan especialmente y/o tenéis más ganas de ver?

W: Nunca he visto a Jamie 4 President, así que me gustaría verles. Ànteros tocaron en nuestra casa y fue genial. Pero, desafortunadamente, llegaremos el sábado, y ambas bandas tocan el viernes. ¡Estamos ansiosos por reunirnos con nuestros amigos de Wild Animals y verles tocar el sábado! Nunca he visto a Kids Insane, pero he oído grandes cosas, así que les vamos a ver también, creo. ¡Afortunadamente nos quedamos el domingo y pillaremos a nuestros amigos de Not Scientist, una banda y gente muy maja!

Si lo underground en general es lo suficientemente malo, ni siquiera hablamos de la clandestinidad de lo rural, a menudo ignorada incluso desde Barcelona y su área metropolitana. ¿Cuáles son, en vuestra opinión, los beneficios más sobresalientes de esta sub-escena? ¿Cuáles son, según vosotros, las grandes diferencias entre tocar y moverse por la gran ciudad o hacerlo por provincias? ¿Cuál es el área de influencia en particular de vuestra banda?

W: [No estoy seguro de haber entendido la pregunta correctamente, pero:] Como banda que toca en grandes ciudades, eso es a lo que normalmente aspiras. Es donde vive más gente y, por lo general, es más fácil llevar a la gente a un espectáculo. Por otra parte, en una ciudad hay mucha «competencia» entre conciertos y festivales que tienen lugar simultáneamente. Y cuando tocas en ciudades más pequeñas, la gente puede estar muy agradecida de que visites su ciudad, y algunas veces eso se traduce en una afluencia masiva de público. Todo está en el equilibrio. Tocar todo tipo de shows es lo más divertido. Entonces, lo que solemos hacer durante la gira es tocar en las grandes ciudades durante los días de la semana y en las ciudades más pequeñas los fines de semana.

Más allá de vuestra presencia en Vidreres, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes como banda para el resto del verano? ¿Dónde más podremos veros?

R: Durante el verano, estamos tocando en festivales, principalmente en Alemania, pero también en Bélgica.

¿Y más allá? ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes a medio plazo? ¿Qué os gustaría ver cuando miréis hacia atrás a fin de año?

R: Nos planeamos lanzar al menos una canción más antes de fin de año, así que mantente atento. Además de lanzar nueva música, estaremos tocando en un montón de festivales y clubes, y por supuesto, terminaremos el año con nuestro Friends First Fest anual en Nijmegen.

W: También estamos trabajando en un poco más de música nueva, pero realmente no podemos decir más sobre eso en este momento…

SofN: Si pudiérais montar una gira con cuatro bandas, siendo vosotros una de ellas, ¿cuáles elegirías y por qué?

R: Si puedo elegir una, sería Restorations. Son viejos amigos que no hemos visto en mucho tiempo, y tampoco son la pareja que mejor encaje con nosotros. Me gusta cuando tocamos / giramos con bandas que son un poco diferentes.

W: Hemos sido bendecidos de poder tocar con muchas de nuestras bandas favoritas, pero una que falta en la lista es Face to Face. Además de eso, nunca los había visto dar un mal bolo y parecen personas agradables.

T: Esta siempre es una pregunta difícil, pero creo que me decanto por Petrol Girls. Me encanta su música, y creo que tienen un mensaje que realmente necesita ser escuchado. Lamentablemente, incluso en nuestra escena punk «abierta y acogedora», existe toda una mierda machista que debe ser desafiada. Aparte de eso, ¡son personas divertidas con las que pasar el rato!

From the Netherlands, we receive the visit of this trio that, since 2005, has been kicking the whole planet making their political and melodic punk rock arrive to the most restless ears of a generation that is willing to change everything…

Hi, guys! First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you?

Willem: Doing great! We just released a new single “Heads You Win, Tails We Lose” and we have been doing some cool festivals and preparing some more festivals for the rest of the summer. Besides that we’re working on new music.

For those of you who do not know your band, could you explain to us a little about who you are, where you come from, what kind of music you do and what other projects your members are or have been involved with?

Riekus: we’re three guys from the Netherlands who’ve been playing and touring for roughly fifteen years now. Our music is a blend of a couple of genres from the 90’s / 00’s and 10’s, always full of energy and melody, accompanied by a critical message. Punk rock, baby! We’ve all been in other bands too. Willem was in a band called Brat Pack, I used to play in a hardcore band called Omission (not the Spanish thrash metal band, mind you..) and am currently in a band called Dead Giveaway and another yet-to-be-named band. Toon used to play in a very loud band called Through The Struggle, and he’s working on new music with friends too.

Toon: That new music is going to be very, very loud too. I have no other words to describe it. It’s just going to be loud as hell… hahaha. Keep an eye out if you like bands like Norma Jean and The Chariot, it’s going to be a bit like that. About Antillectual, I agree with Riekus about the critical message. I feel that is a huge part of our identity: the message and the ethics. This is a cliché (perhaps because there’s some truth in it), but it’s more than just music to us.

The fans of what bands do you think should immediately lend a touch to your music?

R: We get compared to a lot of bands, which is only natural given our influences. I guess if you like Propagandhi, Bad Religion, Strike Anywhere, Hüsker Dü or anything in between, you’ll probably like our music and message too.

T: Apart from the fast-paced, melodic punk songs, we also have a couple of more “Rock” leaning songs, in the vein of Foo Fighters. (At least, that’s a comparison I sometimes hear…)

What are the achievements as a band that you are most proud of? What role does your band play in your lives and in your day to day?

R: Besides the music we write and release, I think the main thing we take pride in is that we’ve managed to play so many places across the globe and met so many people along the way. Touring Europe is great, but going to places like the USA, Canada, Latin America, Russia and Japan just because you play music is such a huge privilege.

W: Music made an incredible impact on our lives, we’re pleased that we can do the same for other people.

T: The biggest achievement I am proud of is the fact that, through this band, I have grown tremendously as a musician, and that we as a band evolve. I’m not very “goal-oriented”, in this sense, but rather see the “achievement” very much in the here-and-now: we’ve achieved to be at a point where we can play shows on a regular basis, in a lot different places, and that’s really cool! But it’s an ongoing process.

To finish presenting you, what song (or songs) do you think would be the most suitable to put someone who is not familiar with your music?

W: If it’s not your latest release you’re most happy with as a band, you’re doing something wrong! So please visit our website and check our new single there via all platforms. Our latest full album can be found here.

Our chronicle of last year’s Actitud Fest was titled «Actitud Fest: the best alternative festival you probably do not know yet». Do you agree with this statement? What do you think makes this festival such a special event?

W: We’ve never been to Actitud Fest, so it’s hard to know what to expect. But we’ve been hearing many great things about the festival. After touring the area in 2017, we’re very excited to go back to Vidreres/Girona/Catalunya/Spain for this occasion!

T: I hope to agree with this statement very soon!

Have you been to the festival in the past, either playing or as an audience? If so… what moments or anecdotes do you remember especially about those experiences?

R: It’s our first time at the festival, and we’ve heard great things about it. We’ve played the Vidreres / Girona area before and always enjoyed the surroundings and the people, so we’re looking forward to Actitud a lot!

What do you think is the differential point that your band brings to the festival? What do you think people will remember especially about your concert?

W: In a good way: we hope that people appreciate us coming to the area only to play Actitud Fest. And we’ll have to take it from there really. The more the people are into what we do, the better our set will be. It’s all about interaction.

In a bad way: since we will be flying over we can’t bring any instruments. If you want to see us being very uncomfortable on gear we’ve never played before, come over and have a laugh!

T: As mentioned before, we’re a band with a message, a band with a certain set of ethics. Though this is not very uncommon in our scene in general, and I’m pretty sure there’s quite a few bands playing Actitud who share these values, I think it really is a quintessential part of Antillectual to convey these values. Apart from that: I play bass without a pick, that seems to surprise a few people every now and then… hahaha.

What other bands of the poster do you especially like and / or do you most want to see?

W: I never saw Jamie 4 President, so I’d be curious to hear that. Ànteros played our local venue and that was great. But unfortunately we will arrive on Saturday, and these are both playing on Friday. Looking forward to meeting up with our friends in Wild Animals and seeing them play on Saturday though! Never seen Kids Insane, but heard great things, so we will check them as well I think. Fortunately we get to stay on Sunday and catch our friends in Not Scientist, great band and people as well!

If the underground in general is bad enough, we do not even talk about rural underground, often ignored even from Barcelona and its metropolitan area. Which are in your opinion the most outstanding benefits of this sub-scene? What, according to you, are the big differences between playing and moving around the big city or doing it by county? What is the area of ​​influence in particular of your band?

W: [Not sure if I understand the question correct, but:] As a band playing big cities is what you usually aim for: it’s where a lot of people live and being active in a subculture it’s usually easier to get people to a show. Then again, in a city there’s a lot of “competition” with other concerts and festivals happening simultaneously. And when you play smaller towns people can be really thankful that you visit their town, and sometimes that results in bigger crowds than you would expect in a bigger city. It’s all in the balance. Playing all types of shows is what is most fun. So what we usually do on tour is play the really big cities during the weekdays and play the smaller towns in the weekends.

Beyond your presence in Vidreres, what are your plans as a band for the rest of the summer? Where else can we see you?

R: for the summer, we’re playing festivals, mainly in Germany, but also in Belgium.

And beyond? What are your medium-term plans? What would you like to see when you look back at the end of the year?

R: we plan to release at least one more new song before the end of the year, so keep an eye out for that. Besides releasing new music, we’re playing a bunch of festivals and club shows, and of course we will finish the year with our annual Friends First Fest in Nijmegen.

W: we’re also working on some more new music, but we can’t really say more about that right now…

 If you could mount a tour with four bands, being yours one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

R: If I can pick one, it would be Restorations. They’re old friends who we haven’t seen in a while, and they’re also not the most typical match for us. I like it when we play / tour with bands that are a bit different.

W: We’ve been blessed to play with many of our favorite bands already, but one that’s missing on the list is Face to Face. On top of that I’ve never seen them play a bad show and they seem nice people to be around.

T: This always is a tough question, but I think I’d go for Petrol Girls. I absolutely love their music, and I think they have a message that really needs to be heard. Sadly enough, even in our “open and welcoming” punk scene there’s quite some macho bullshit that needs to be challenged. Apart from that, they’re fun people to hang out with!
