Las bandas del Tótum (XVIII) – ECHOTEST: ‘Mucha gente se sorprende de los sonidos y de la música que creamos’

Llegamos casi al final de nuestro extensísimo repaso a las bandas que van a participar en el Tótum Revolútum de este año, y lo hacemos con uno de sus participantes más especiales. Julie Slick y Marco Machera empezaron como un dúo transatlántico de bajos, instrumentos de los que son capaces de sacar sonidos que ni te imaginas posibles. Ahora llevan también un batería, con lo que se presentarán en Calàbria 66 como una banda de pleno derecho. Hablamos con Julie para que conozcamos un poco más esta interesante banda.

SofN: Antes que nada, muchas gracias por dedicar algo de vuestro tiempo a responder estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo estáis?

Estoy muy bien, gracias! Estamos en proceso de acabar con los últimos retoques a nuestro cuarto disco, que se va a llamar Daughter of Ocean.

SofN: Para aquellos que no conozcan vuestra banda, explicadnos un poco quiénes sois, de dónde venís y qué hace que seáis lo que sois. ¿Qué habéis publicado de momento y dónde podemos encontrarlo?

Somos un proyecto bastante único, ya que empezamos como un dúo de bajos procedente de dos continentes distintos – Yo soy de Philadelphia y Marco Machera es italiano. Nos encontramos en el Three of a Perfect Pair Music Camp en 2011 pero no empezamos a tocar juntos hasta tres años más tarde, después de una de mis giras con el Crimson ProjeKct. Desde entonces hemos publicado tres discos de los que estamos muy orgullosos: Fourth Dementia, Le Fil Rouge y From Two Balconies, que están disponibles en mi bandcamp: julieslick.bandcamp.com. Por el camino hemos encontrado un batería permanente llamado Alessandro Inolti, que nos ha ayudado a transformar este proyecto en una banda de verdad.

SofN: ¿Los fans de qué bandas creéis que deberian pegarle una escuchada a vuestra música?

King Crimson y Adrian Belew (por supuesto), pero también Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Tool, Primus, Massive Attack… hummm… creo que estoy enumerando mis bandas favoritas.

SofN: Pronto vendréis al Tótum Revolútum. ¿Qué conocéis del festival? ¿Cómo llegásteis a tocar aquí?

He estado en Barcelona tres veces con Adrian Belew y con Echotest tocamos nuestros primeros conciertos en Andalucía el pasado otoño, así que es un honor ser invitados de nuevo a España para tocar en este festival.

SofN: ¿Conocéis alguna de la otras bandas que van a tocar en el festival? Si es así… ¿cuáles de ellas estais deseando ver?

He girado con LizZard. Son geniales y montan un show muy compacto y muy heavy… ¡y también son gente hilarante! Tengo muchas ganas de gritar y berrear con Katy, su batería.

SofN: ¿Qué crees que vuestro concierto puede aportar al global del festival? ¿Qué crees que hace que vuestra banda sea especial entre las demás en el cartel y en la escena progresiva?

Siempre estamos buscando nuevas maneras de experimentar con nuestros bajos, así que creo que somos una banda muy progresiva en el sentido real de la palabra. Nuestros conciertos te llevan a pequeños viajes, y mucha gente se sorprende de los sonidos y de la música que creamos.

SofN: Aunque hay muchos estilos representados, todas las bandas participantes en el festival tienen una cosa en común: sois pequeños baluartes dentro de una escena progresiva joven que está viviendo un momento dulce en los últimos años, tanto a nivel de calidad como de popularidad. ¿Por qué creéis que hay este interés últimamente?

Creo que es una reacción contra la música mundana del mainstream. El prog es más exigente, y pone un reto al oyente. Creo que la gente, y especialmente los más jóvenes, están aburridos y buscan géneros más excitantes e impresivos.

SofN: En Barcelona, especialmente, creo que esta escena es particularmente fuerte, con muchas bandas de gran calidad y eventos anuales como el propio Tótum Revolútum, el AMFest o el Be Prog! My Friend estableciéndose año tras año. ¿Cómo está el tema en vuestra área de procedencia? ¿Lo notáis ahí también?

Definitivamente hay una comunidad prog a nivel mundial, y está claro que hay una aquí en Philadelphia, aunque lo que más me excita de escenas en países como España es que tiende a ser muy diversa. Y siemre es bonito ver esto reflejado en la audiencia.

SofN: ¿Habéis tocado en Barcelona antes? ¿Qué recordáis de esos conciertos?

¡Sí! Es uno de mis lugares favoritos para tocar en todo el mundo, y todo un placer volver para hacerlo por primera vez con Echotest.

SofN: ¿Qué planes tenéis para 2018 y qué os gustaría ver cuando echéis la vista atrás a final de año?

Como he mencionado antes, estamos acabando con nuestro cuarto disco, así que tengo muchas ganas de publicarlo antes de fin de año. Estáte atento a Daughter of Ocean, te prometo que es muy bueno. Los fans de las bandas que he comentado deberían pegarle un orejazo cuando salga.

SofN: Si tuvierais que escoger una sola canción de vuestro catálogo que creais que os representa más que cualquier otra, ¿cuál sería y por qué?

Hummm… ésta es complicada. Quizás la primera canción que Marco y yo escribimos juntos, «1986», porque tiene un montón de loops, efectos y riffs. No tiene voces, pero es un tema que te invita a nuestro universo sonoro.

SofN: Si puedierais montar una gira con cuatro bandas, siendo LizZard una de ellas, ¿Cuáles escogeriais y por qué?

Nosotros, Aphex Twin, Peter Gabriel y Radiohead. ¿Por qué no soñar a lo grande?

SofN: First of all, thanks for dedicating some time to answer these questions for us. ¿How are you these days?

I’m very well, thank you! We are just in the process of putting the finishing touches on our fourth EchoTest album, called Daughter of Ocean.

SofN: For those that don’t know your band, tell us a bit who you are, where do you come from and what makes you who you are. ¿What have you published so far and where can we find it?

We are quite a unique project, since we started out as a bass duo hailing from two different continents—I’m from Philadelphia and Marco Machera is from Italy. We met at the Three of a Perfect Pair Music Camp in 2011 but didn’t start playing together until 3 years later, after one of my tours with the Crimson ProjeKct. We have proudly put out 3 albums since—“Fourth Dementia”, “Le Fil Rouge” and “From Two Balconies”, which are all available on my bandcamp site—julieslick.bandcamp.com. Along the way we’ve found a permanent drummer from Rome called Alessandro Inolti, who has helped transform this project into a real band.

SofN: ¿The fans of which bands you think should check out your music?

King Crimson and Adrian Belew (of course), as well as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Tool, Primus, Massive Attack.. now I’m just listing all of my favorite bands…

SofN: You will be soon coming to the Tótum Revolútum. What do you know about the festival? How did you get to play there?

I’ve been to Barcelona three times with Adrian Belew and EchoTest played our very first shows in Andalusia last fall so it’s a real honor to be invited back to Spain to play this festival!

SofN: Do you know any of the other bands that will be playing in the festival? If so, which ones are you looking forward to see?

I have toured with Lizzard and they are great and put on a very tight, heavy live show… and they hilarious people, too! I look forward to screaming and shouting with Katy, their drummer.

SofN: What do you think your show can give to the whole of the festival? What do you think makes your band special amongst the other ones in the bill and in the progressive scene?

We’re always looking for new ways to experiment with our basses, so I believe we are very progressive band in the true sense of the word. Our show takes you on a bit of a journey and a lot of people are surprised at the sounds and music we create.

SofN: Even though there are a lot of styles represented, all the bands in the festival have one thing in common: you are small strongholds for a young progressive scene that is living a worlwide sweet moment in the last few years, both in terms of quality and popularity. Why do you think there is such interest lately?

I think it’s backlash against the mundane music of the mainstream… prog is more demanding—it challenges the listener. I think people—especially kids—are bored and looking for more exciting, impressive genres.

SofN: In Barcelona, specially, I think this scene is getting particularly strong, with lots of great bands and yearly events like the Tótum Revólutum, the AMFest or the Be Prog! My Friend Festival establishing themselves. How do you see it in your own areas of origin? Do you notice it too there?

There is definitely a worldwide prog community, and surely one here in Philadelphia, however what excites me the most about scenes in countries like Spain is that it tends to be more diverse—it’s always nice to see that in an audience.

SofN: Have you played in Barcelona before? What do you remember about those shows?

Yes! It’s one of my favorite places to play in the whole world, and real pleasure to be here for the first time with EchoTest.

SofN: What plans do you have for 2018 and what would you like to see when you turn the head back at the end of the year?

As I mentioned, we are just finishing up our 4th album, so I’m very much looking forward to releasing that before the end of the year—keep an eye out for “Daughter of Ocean”—I promise it’s a good one… fans of the aforementioned bands should check it out when it becomes available.

SofN: If you had to choose a single song from your catalog that you think it represents you more than any other, which one would it be and why?

That’s a tough one… maybe the first song Marco and I ever wrote together “1986,” because it features looping, cool effects and riffs. It doesn’t have any vocals, but the track invites you to our universe of soundscapes.

SofN: If you could put up a tour line up with any four bands, being yours one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

Us, Aphex Twin, Peter Gabriel, and Radiohead… because dream big, ha!
