Entrevista a Mat Sinner, bajista de Primal Fear: ‘Estoy feliz si damos un espectáculo brutal y en eso me focalizo’

Hola, Mat. Gracias por usar tu tiempo respondiendo estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo te encontramos?

Entrevistas y entrevistas y entrevistas… además de organizando las próximas actividades. Tenemos fiestas de novedades (del nuevo disco) y otro fin de semana de festivales. Después prepararemos el tour europeo.

Estos días estamos escuchando Apocalypse, y aunque aún tenemos que profundizar más, la primera impresión es que se trata de un bombazo. ¿Qué opinas del disco y qué crees que ofrece comparándolo con los otros trabajos de Primal Fear? ¿Cómo os sentís tú y toda la banda?

Sin duda es uno de nuestros mejores trabajos, pero al final serán los fans quien decida cómo podemos rankear Apocalypse en nuestra historia. Es el segundo álbum de estudio con el mismo equipo y los tours largos han ayudado a que estemos aún más unidos. Las sesiones de grabación fueron muy motivantes, pacíficas y creativas. Hemos trabajado muy duro en cada detalle y arreglo y hemos intentado trabajar con una actitud algo menos egoísta.

Sé que quizá sea algo pronto para responder, pero ¿qué canciones del álbum crees que pueden ser futuros clásicos de Primal Fear?

Sí, es muy pronto pero ya hemos metido “Hounds of Justice” en el set list del festival Granito Rock. Creo al menos meteremos 5 o 5 nuevos temas en el tour europeo.

Si cuento bien, Apocalypse es el 12º álbum de estudio de Primal Fear (aparte de álbumes en directo y otros lanzamientos). No está nada mal. ¿Podías imaginar una carrera como esta cuando empezasteis al final de los 90?

No, en absoluto. Empezamos como un proyecto, nos convertimos en una banda, luego en una hermandad y ahora tenemos el line up más potente de nuestra carrera. Estoy muy contento del progreso del grupo. Nos hemos establecido en todo el mundo, tenemos fans y hacemos tours por todas partes. Creo que nadie podía esperar esto cuando lanzamos el primer álbum.

Después del regreso de Naumann a la banda en 2015, os habéis establecido con 3 guitarristas. Ahora que habéis grabado un segundo álbum con este formato, ¿cómo ha afectado esto a la composición de las canciones y las actuaciones en vivo?

Seguimos con la misma fórmula componiendo y grabando un disco. Tom empezó la banda conmigo y Ralf y es genial tenerlo de vuelta a tiempo completo, escribimos juntos “The Ritual” para el nuevo álbum y escribiremos más temas para Primal Fear en el futuro.

Más allá de Primal Fear, también estás involucrado en muchos otros proyectos, como Sinner, Silent Force o Jorn. ¿En qué estado se encuentran esos otros grupos, especialmente tu proyecto personal? ¿Qué te aporta cada uno de ellos como músico?

Tocaremos algunos shows en 2018 con Sinner y nuestro exitoso álbum Tequila Suicide (2017). Tocaremos con Primal Fear en Japón y Australia y haremos planes para un nuevo álbum. Ya no estoy en Jorn ni en Silent Force.

Otro de los proyectos en el que has estado involucrado es, prcesiamente, el de Kiske / Sommerville, junto a tu colega de banda Magnus Karlsson. Ahora que Michael Kiske está de vuelta en Helloween y están logrando cotas de éxito sin precedentes con su muy esperada reunión, ¿Qué futuro crees que tiene Kiske/Sommerville? ¿Y ya de paso, qué opinas de la reunión de Helloween y su éxito?

Amo la reunion de Helloween, ¡los chicos lo están haciendo genial! Me encantan los álbumes de Kiske/Sommerville y si la ocasión es propicia estaré preparado para trabajar en un tercer álbum, si todo el mundo está listo y quiere hacer un álbum más.

El próximo otoño os veremos de tour por España, de nuevo, un país en el que tenéis unos fans muy leales. De hecho, según setlist.fm, España es el tercer país en el que más habéis tocado, justo después de Alemania y los Estados Unidos. Justo estuvisteis tocando aquí la semana pasada. ¿Por qué os gusta especialmente? ¿Tienes algún recuerdo en particular de vuestros conciertos en nuestro país?

Amamos España – es así de simple. El entusiasmo de los fans es fantástico. La semana pasada en el Granito Rock, los fans volvieron a demostrar como de fuerte pueden rockear y empujarnos. Espero que los shows de octubre sean igual y que nos lo pasemos genial.

El próximo otoño vendréis con Riot V, y yo personalmente creo que han sacado uno de los discos del año. ¿Lo has escuchado? ¿Qué crees que podemos esperar del show, tanto de vuestra parte como de Riot V?

Es nuestra decisión quien abre nuestros conciertos. Creo que eso contesta la pregunta sobre si nos gusta el grupo y su disco y esperamos un tour demoledor

¿Por qué una águila como símbolo de Primal Fear? ¿Qué representa?

¡Libertad y poder!

Aunque se os etiqueta como power metal en muchas ocasiones, para mí Primal Fear es heavy metal puro y duro. ¿Cómo definirías vuestra música? ¿Te importan las etiquetas? ¿Cuales són vuestros pilares básicos?

Para ser honestos, no me importa. Estoy muy content de que podamos componer y grabar la música que nos gusta. Esto es mucho más importante que cualquier clasificación de terceras partes.

Imaginemos que pudierais girar con 3 bandas (activas o inactivas). ¿Cuáles serían las escogidas?

Perdona, pero ya no tengo este tipo de sueños. No importa qué grupo toque antes y después de nosotros. Estoy feliz si damos un espectáculo brutal y en eso me focalizo.

Hello, Mat. Thanks for investing some of your time answering these questions for Science of Noise. How are you? What are you into these days?

Interviews and interviews and interviews  J ….. plus organizing the next activities. We have release parties lined up and another weekend of festivals. Then we will prepare for the European Tour.

These days we are listening to “Apocalypse”, and although we still need to go deeper into it, the very first impression is blasting. What do you think about the album and what do you think this records brings to the table compared with the other ones? How do you and the whole band feel about it?

It’s of course one of our best albums, but finally the fans will decide where we can finally rank Apocalypse in our history. It is the second studio album with the same team and the long tours helped to be an even stronger unit. The recordings were all very motivated, peaceful and creative. We’ve worked very hard on the details and arrangements and try to work with a bit meaner attitude.

I know it might be early to tell, but what songs of the album do you feel can become classics in future Primal Fear’s setlists?

Yes, too early but we’ve already had Hounds Of Justice in the set list of the Granito Rock festival. I think we will at least 4 maybe 5 new tracks on the European Tour.

If I’m counting well, Apocalypse is Primal Fear’s 12th studio album (besides live albums and others releases). That’s not bad at all. Could you imagine a career like this when you started back in the late 90s?

No, not at all. We’ve started as a project, became a band, became a brotherhood and we have the strongest line up in our career. I’m very happy about the progress of the band. We’ve established our band in the whole world, have fans and can tour everywhere. I think nobody ever thought about that at the time we’ve released the first album.

After the return of Tom Naumann to the band in 2015, you have settled with three guitar players. Now that you recorded the second album with this format, how has this affected the way you approach the composition of the songs and your live performances?

We have still the same formula in creating and recording an album. Tom started the band with me & Ralf and it is wonderful to have him back full time and we wrote together The Ritual for the new album and will write more songs for PF in the future.

Besides Primal Fear, you are also involved in many other projects, like Sinner, Silent Force or Jorn. What is the current status of those bands, specially your personal one? What does each of them give to you as a musician?

We will play some more shows in 2018 with Sinner and our successful álbum Tequila Suicide. We play with Primal Fear in Japan and Australia and we make plans for a new album. I’m not involved anymore in Jorn or Silent Force.

Another of the projects you are involved in is precisely Kiske / Sommerville along with your bandmate in Primal Fear Magnus Karlsson. Now that Michael Kiske is back in Helloween and they are reaching unprecedented success heights with their long-awaited reunion, what do you think holds the future for Kiske / Sommerville? What do you think, by the way, of the Helloween reunion and success?

I love the Helloween reunion and the guys are doing great! I love the Kiske / Somerville albums too and if the time is right I will be ready to work with them on a third album, IF everybody is ready and want to do one more album J

Next fall we will see you touring Spain again, a country where you have a very loyal following. Actually, according to setlist.fm, Spain is the third country you have played the most, just after Germany and the United States. (you just been here this last week, by the way). Why is it so and what do you specially like about it? Do you have any particular memories or anecdotes about your shows in our country?

We love Spain – it’s that easy. The enthusiasm of the fans is fantastic. Just last weekend at the Granito Rock, the fans proved again how hard they can rock and push us! I hope at the shows in October it will be the same and we will have a great time together!

Next autumn you will be coming with Riot V, and I personally think they have released one of the best albums of the year. Have you heard it? What do you think we can expect from that show, both from you and from Riot V?

Of course it’s our decision who will be the special guests on our tour. Think that answers your question that we like the band and their new album and looking forward to a crushing tour!

Why an eagle as a symbol of Primal Fear? What does this represent for you?

Freedom & Power!

Even though you are labeled as power metal in many places, for me Primal Fear is pure heavy metal. How would you define your music? Do you even care about labels? Which are your basic uncompromising pillars?

To be honest, I don’t care. I’m very happy that we can write and record the music we love. This is far more important than any classification from third parties.

Let’s imagine you could tour with 3 bands (active or inactive). Which would be the chosen ones?

Sorry, but I don’t have these “dreams” anymore. It doesn’t matter which band is playing before and after us. I’m happy if we play a killer show and that’s my focus.
